At Globe Property Management, we are proud of our commitment to Canadian artists.  We are excited to present a new addition to our office art collection, “Today’s Tom Sawyer,” created by prominent Montreal artist and sculptor, Heidi Feldman Spector.

The sculpture, made of a blue sphere on a black base, is inspired by the famous Mark Twain novel “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” as well as the classic rock song “Tom Sawyer” by Canada’s very own Rush.  It represents the idea that each person is an individual and is entitled to live life on their own terms.  This concept is reinforced by the quote by renowned author Ayn Rand, which sits just below the sculpture, and is attributed to the hero of her famous 1957 novel Atlas Shrugged.

Ms. Feldman Spector is represented by galleries in Montreal, Toronto, New York, Miami, and Los Angeles. Her work can be viewed online at http://heidispector.com/ and on Instagram @heidispector.

Trying to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle? A great place to start is waste reduction

We fill our homes with so much stuff. Think about how much garbage you create each week! Now imagine if you could cut that in half simply by making changes to your lifestyle.

And if you’re looking for another incentive, cutting back on waste means you’ll make far fewer trips to the dumpster every week. Not a bad perk, especially when it’s freezing cold outside!

Try these seven easy ways to start producing less waste and reducing your greenhouse gas emissions:

1. Buy in Bulk

When you buy items in small quantities, that means each portion is individually packaged, and each package goes straight to the waste bin.

By buying in bulk, you can cut back on extra waste.

Try to avoid foods and products with individually wrapped contents; for example, a box of granola bars with each bar inside wrapped.

Here’s an alternative: Make your own granola bars!

Mix up a big batch using oats, honey, and dried fruit, then pop it in the oven. Cut it into small squares and keep it in your fridge. You can freeze any leftovers to use the following week.

By making your own snacks instead of buying pre-packaged ones, you’ll save money, eat healthier, and reduce food waste! Sure, it takes more time, but it’s definitely worth the effort.

2. Eliminate Single-Use Packaging & Plastics

It’s easy to rely on plastic packaging; plastic is cheap, easy, and convenient. From plastic bags to plastic wrap, it’s super useful for packing up leftovers.

Look around you. How many things in your immediate vicinity will only be used once? Even if the item is recyclable, it takes energy to break it down.

Unfortunately, single-use plastics stick around long after you throw them away. Did you know that almost all plastic ever made still exists on our planet? It’s hard to fathom what that looks like, but there’s one clear takeaway: It’s time to cut back on plastic.

We encourage you to look for alternatives, like reusable containers that can be used repeatedly instead of Styrofoam ones that get thrown away after one meal. You can save the takeout containers from your favourite restaurant or purchase a glass set from the grocery store. Buy reusable water bottles instead of using plastic water bottles.

Whenever possible, trade your disposable items for reusable ones.

3. Brush Up on Recycling Rules

We’re all guilty of it: Sometimes, you toss an item in the trash because you aren’t totally sure if it’s recyclable. What can you do to prevent this common mistake?

Depending on where you live, the items that can be recycled will vary. For example, in Winnipeg, black plastics aren’t accepted.

Consider placing a recycling guide near your trash bin. Having it within eyesight will encourage you to double-check when you aren’t sure. Or, bookmark the Recyclepedia, so it’s handy whenever you need to check which materials are accepted.

4. Try Composting

You’ve probably heard about composting by now, but you aren’t sure how to get started with it.

Composting is when you put certain types of food waste into a compost bin instead of the trash can. A few examples include egg shells, grass clippings, coffee grounds, tea bags, and fruit and vegetable scraps.

Why should you try composting? For one, it cuts back on the amount of waste you produce. Rather than sending food scraps to the trash, you’re repurposing them for something else.

Another benefit? You can use your compost as fertilizer in your garden. When summer comes around, add your compost to the earth that your home-grown vegetables are planted in. It’s nutrient-rich food for your plants.

5. Meal Plan

Here’s a surprising fact: Every year, up to 60% of the food produced in Canada gets thrown away. Most of that food is thrown out because it isn’t eaten before it spoils.

You’ve most likely dealt with this yourself. You start the week by buying a bunch of vegetables, fully intending to cook with them. But they end up going bad before you do. What can you do to eat healthily and reduce food waste?

Meal planning is when you choose meals for each night of the week before you go grocery shopping. That way, you’ll only buy what you need, and you’ll make sure it gets used.

Meal planning takes time and forethought, but it will help you stick to a healthier diet and cut back on takeout. Not only will you reduce household waste, but you’ll get rid of that dreadful moment—the one where you come home from a long day of work and have no idea what to cook!

6. Switch Plastic Bags for Reusable Bags

You used to see plastic bags everywhere you went; you were handed them with your grocery orders and your takeout meals. Now, not as much. We’re starting to see this type of plastic phased out in favour of reusable bags. It’s time to hop on board the reusable bag train!

We suggest taking a few reusable bags with you in your car or backpack. That way, if you need to make a last-minute trip to the store, you don’t need to buy extra bags.

Reusable items aren’t better for the environment if they only get used once! Try to use the same bags each time you visit grocery stores.

7. Ask for Email Receipts

We’re willing to wager that most of the time, the paper receipts you’re given at a store get crumbled up in your pocket and thrown out a few days later.

Whenever you have the option, ask for an electronic receipt instead. You’ll still have a copy to keep for your records, and you’ll cut back on wasted paper. Even better, your bag won’t be cluttered with lost receipts!

Adulting. It’s such a big word. As you get older, being an “adult” sneaks up on you. Suddenly, you’re living on your own without a couch to your name. And you realize it’s time…Time to decorate the living room.

Maybe you’re furnishing a living room for the first time. You have no idea where to start. That’s why we’re writing this blog post on how to create an adult living room.

A living room isn’t quite as essential as some of the other areas in your apartment. You probably spent more time (and money) on your kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom. So yes, you can get by without a living room. But if you’re ready to take your adulting to the next step, it’s time to furnish this final room.

Your college days are behind you. So here’s a crash course on ten things that will transform your living room into a more “grown-up” space:

1. Coffee Table

Whenever you’re lounging in the living room, you usually have a collection of snacks with you. Your preferred mug with your favourite tea. A big bowl of popcorn. And maybe something sweet on the side.

But without a table, all this stuff will end up beside you on the couch. It’s not exactly inviting for your guests.

That’s exactly why you need a coffee table. Use it to place anything you keep handy when you’re hanging out or watching TV.

Better yet, get a table with interior storage. It’s the perfect place to stash your coffee table books, candles, or hidden snacks (so your roommate doesn’t eat them!).

2. TV Stand With Storage

You keep a lot of odds and ends in your living room. Remotes, video game consoles, movie cases—the list goes on. Without a storage shelf, these random items will end up in all kinds of places—cluttering up your coffee table, taking up space on the couch, or even being left on the floor.

A TV stand gives you a place for your big screen and a spot to store these belongings. When everything is in its proper place, and you know where to find what you’re looking for, it can reduce your stress levels and benefit your mental health.

3. Footstool

Everyone tells you to buy a couch. And that’s fair—any living room needs one.

But unless you’ve shelled out the dough to buy a recliner, your couch probably doesn’t have any type of footrest.

An affordable way to fix that problem? Pick up an ottoman! Your adult living room will be infinitely more comfortable when you have a place to kick your feet up and relax.

4. Live Plants

Breathe some life into the space with plants. It’s called a living room for a reason. If you have any windows in your space, find a small table to put a plant or two on.

A pop of green adds a personal touch to your adult living room. And if you’re limited on natural light, choose plants that can live without direct sunlight. A few examples include lucky bamboo and monstera plants.

5. Area Rug

There’s something so tasteful about an area rug in a living room—one that ties the whole room together. It’s an essential part of your living room decor.

And another great thing is that a rug is soft and warm on your feet, so you’re cozy walking around barefoot.

6. Coasters

This one seems like a small thing, but hear us out.

You’ve gone ahead and purchased a coffee table for your living room—a nice one, made with a wood or glass surface.

You have a few guests over, and the next day, you notice rings all over the surface of that table. Now you have to clean it each time you put a drink down. It may even damage your table.

Protect it with coasters! The cool thing about them is that you can choose coasters with all kinds of fun designs on them. Local landmarks, your favourite video game characters, or movie trivia facts—it’s up to you.

7. Oil Diffuser

Winters in Winnipeg get so dry. One way to add moisture to the air and a pleasant scent? Set up an oil diffuser in your living room.

Ideally, you could place it beside the spot you like to sit. The scent doesn’t travel far, so you’ll need to be close by to notice it.

Fill it with water, and add a few drops of essential oil. Depending on the type of oil you choose, it may have unique effects on your mood. A few popular picks include lavender, eucalyptus, and bergamot.

8. The Coziest Couch

We had to include this one on the list. Whether you love binging Netflix or simply unwinding after a never-ending day, you need a couch to help you do that. And one something that’s all about style. You need something comfy!

Whether you prefer leather or fabric, loveseats or sectionals, the important thing is that your couch is comfortable. A place you could spend hours relaxing or even taking an afternoon nap. Make sure it has enough space to fit the members of your household (or your usual guests).

9. Throw Blankets

You never know when you’ll get a chill. That’s why it’s great to keep a blanket on hand at all times—one that’s always within reach. Fold it up and keep it under a table, or lay it on top of your couch for easy access.

10. String Lights

You want to create a cozier ambiance in your living room. What’s the best way to do that? By setting up string lights.

Set up these tiny lights anywhere you want to add the glow of a warm candle. Keep it neutral with soft yellow lights, or choose multi-coloured ones to add some fun.

Find the Perfect Apartment for Your Living Room Decor

Maybe you’ve never furnished a living room before because your current place doesn’t have the space for it. Is it time for an update? At Globe Property Management, we offer apartments for rent in Winnipeg. Browse our available units today!

It’s been a long journey, but after weeks of browsing online listings and visiting apartment after apartment, you’ve finally found it. The one. The place you can hang your hat and call home.

Choosing an apartment is not something to take lightly. It’s a place you’ll spend much of your time in the next 12 months or so. Naturally, you want one that will be the best fit for your lifestyle and your budget.

Signing a lease is a big deal. What do you need to know before you add your signature to that dotted line?

Below, we’ve listed the most important questions to ask before committing to an apartment. Have a discussion with the prospective landlord or property manager about the following:

When Is the Expected Move-In Date at the Rental Property?

If you’re currently bound to a rental agreement at a different property, this question is especially important. You need an apartment that becomes available the day you move out! Check the fine print on this one because it can make all the difference.

How Much Is the Security Deposit?

A security deposit covers the damages you may cause to the unit while you live there. Upon moving out, your security deposit should be returned to you after any damages are factored in. Be sure to ask how much the security deposit is; usually, it’s between half of or a full month’s rent.

But if there is no damage to the rental unit, and you leave it in the same condition you received it in, then you should ask: “Is the security deposit refundable?”

How Are Rent Payments Accepted?

Paying rent is an inevitable part of living in an apartment. But how do you pay rent?

These days, most tenants prefer to do online payments. It’s convenient and ensures the payment is received instantly.

Some property managers may want cheques. Ask what their preferred payment method is so that you aren’t in for a surprise come the 1st of the month.

You should also ask about late fees. See if your property manager will charge you for each day you’re late on rental payments (and by how much) or if they offer a grace period for payments that are a day or two late.

Which Utilities Are Included?

This varies from building to building. With some rentals, you may be required to cover the cost of electricity, heat, and water. With others, all you need to pay is the monthly rent.

Factor in utility costs when you’re budgeting for a place. For example, the rent alone may be affordable, but what if the place has baseboard heaters? Your heating bills in the winter may surpass $100/month, depending on the size of the apartment and how well-insulated it is.

Make sure to ask about utilities in advance of signing a lease. The property manager may be able to give you estimates of how much each utility will cost monthly.

And if you find out you’re responsible for paying certain utilities, you can set up accounts with those utility companies ahead of time.

Is Renter’s Insurance Required?

On the fence about buying renter’s insurance? Your property manager may require that you purchase it before you move in.

And this isn’t a bad thing! Tenant insurance protects you in the event of a fire, theft incident, liability, and/or vandalism. This is separate from the insurance that your landlord has, which only covers the building itself—not the contents of your unit.

With tenant insurance, you can cover the cost of property damage and replace your belongings after an insured peril.

What Amenities Are Offered?

Does your apartment include a parking spot? What about the internet or cable? Is there a pet policy?

You can’t always have it all. But if you’re choosing between a few apartments, make a list of which amenities are most important to you. For example, if you drive a car, then you’ll need a parking spot more than cable TV.

What Are the Lease Terms?

In other words, how long does the lease last?

In most cases, leases last for 1 year. But they may be for 6 months, 18 months, or 2 years. This is an important thing to double-check before you sign off on the lease.

Here’s another question to ask: If you decide to leave your apartment before the lease is up, what’s the policy for ending the lease early? Check on how much notice is required and if you need to find someone to sublet it.

How Are Maintenance Requests Handled?

It happens: As careful as you are, sometimes things break down. It could be your fridge; it could be your heating system. You rely on these appliances to keep your food fresh and your apartment safe. Timely repairs are crucial. If something goes wrong, who do you call?

Ideally, you want to live somewhere maintenance requests are handled promptly. Find out how the property manager handles maintenance requests—and how quickly you can expect a response when something goes wrong.

What if One Person Doesn’t Pay Rent?

Are you moving in with a roommate or partner? Ask the property manager what the protocol is when one person fails to pay rent.

Since both of your names are on the lease, this is especially important. You may be financially responsible for upholding your roommate’s half of the rent if they fail to pay. Find out what will happen if one person starts missing payments or moves out suddenly.

One of the most exciting parts of moving out? Getting to decorate your space how you want to. But in all the excitement of moving, you might forget some bathroom essentials.

It’s important to put thought into how you stock your bathroom. After all, it’s a space you use every day! From getting ready in the morning to running a bubble bath after a long day, your bathroom is your sanctuary. It’s a retreat from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. And it should feel like one, too.

We’re covering the top 10 bathroom essentials that all apartment-dwellers needs:

    1. Cleaning Products and Toilet Paper

Bathrooms get dirty faster than any other room in your apartment—except for the kitchen, perhaps. They need to be cleaned often!

Here’s a list of cleaning supplies you should stock up on:

Most cleaning products at the store contain harsh chemicals. Consider picking up green cleaning supplies to keep the air clean, too.

    2. A Cool Shower Curtain (and Liner)

Everyone needs a shower curtain and liner—they keep water inside the tub and off of your floors.

Do you like the shower curtain in your bathroom? Or is it too ordinary? You don’t have to spend too much to get a curtain that will make a statement.

It’s no big deal if your liner is a plain colour. But consider choosing a curtain that makes your bathroom feel like yours.

On the topic of showers—do you have a non-slip mat in your shower? If not, consider picking one up. The CDC found that thousands of people go to the ER every year due to bathroom injuries.

    3. Candles

Is this item as essential as the other ones on this list? Maybe not. But it’s still important. No bubble bath is complete without the warm glow of a flickering candle.

Candles serve another function—they’re great at masking unpleasant odours. This one doesn’t need explaining; we’ve all been there. If you keep any type of scent neutralizer in the bathroom, your guests will thank you for it!

Alternatively, you could set up an essential oil diffuser or put out a scented spray.

    4. A Bath Mat

As soon as you step out of the shower, you’re dripping wet! You’ll need a bath mat to soak up all that water and save your floors from damage. Get one that’s thick and soft on your bare feet. Choose one that matches your towels and shower curtain to tie the room together.

    5. A Drain Snake for the Shower and Bathroom Sink

It’s inevitable: After months of daily use, your shower drain will fill up with hair and soap residue. You’ll eventually have a clogged drain on your hands.

What can you do? Instead of spending money on a plumber or calling your landlord, you can probably fix it yourself with a drain snake. Roll up your sleeves, take out the drain snake, and remove the gunk that’s clogging your shower.

    6. The Dental Essentials

We’re willing to wager you already have a toothbrush and toothpaste in your bathroom, but do you have a toothbrush holder? This will keep your manual or electric toothbrush off the bathroom counter and maintain its cleanliness. Keep a container of dental floss on hand, and mouthwash for when you get bad breath that just won’t go away.

    7. Luxurious Hand and Bath Towels

It’s tempting to go for the towels on clearance—the ones made of scratchy fibers and bland colours, but spending a bit more on nicer towels makes a huge difference.

Think about it: You step out of a hot shower and you’re suddenly shivering in the cooler air. When you go to dry off, you can either use a scratchy towel that’s not very absorbent or one that’s soft, plush, and leaves you feeling dry and pampered.

Choose a towel that will look good hanging on your bathroom door! If you want to go the extra mile, pick up a matching set of hand towels, too.

It never hurts to have extra towels. If you don’t have space in your bathroom, store them in a linen closet.

    8. Extra Lights

Dim lighting is great when you’re taking a bath and relaxing, but what about if you’re getting ready in the morning? For that, you’ll need a quality light setup.

You can’t exactly swap out your light fixtures in an apartment. You can, however, add extra light sources where you need them most. Set up a magnifying mirror with lights in it or a lamp on the countertop.

It’s important to have great lighting all around the house, but especially so in your bathroom!

    9. Small Trash Can

This is a bathroom must-have! You can’t flush everything down the toilet. For cleaning wipes, Q-tips, cotton balls, and hygiene products, you need a small garbage can, preferably one with a lid.

    10. Drawer Organizers

By the end of this list, you might be left with a handful of products that you don’t know where to put. Your drawers and surfaces may look messy. You may start to regret buying all this stuff in the first place.

Enter drawer organizers… Slip these storage bins inside any drawer or your bathroom cabinet. Use them to separate your nail polish from your face wash, and your hair care products from your cleaning products.

If you have a tiny bathroom, you need these organizers! You’ll save on counter space and make your small bathroom feel much bigger.

On the topic of bathroom storage, set up a shower caddy if you don’t already have one. This will keep your soap, shampoo, and conditioner bottles organized.

Find Your New Bathroom With Globe Property Management

Your bathroom needs more than toilet paper. With the above checklist, you can ensure your bathroom has everything you need!

Perhaps you’re looking for a new apartment with a more spacious bathroom—one where your essential bathroom supplies aren’t all crammed in one drawer. At Globe, we’ll help you find Winnipeg apartments that suit your needs. Feel at home in a space that feels like it was designed just for you. Find an apartment on our website today!

It’s the first thing you see when you walk in the door: The entryway to your apartment.

An entryway sets the stage; it influences the atmosphere of your apartment. It creates a transition from one area to another.

A well-decorated entrance space is welcoming and puts your guests at ease the moment they step into your home.

You want to be greeted by an area that reflects your style and personality. But entryways often come as an afterthought.

You can pick your apartment. But you can’t exactly pick its floor plan. If you aren’t happy with how your entryway looks, you aren’t stuck with it!

We’ve compiled a few design tips you can use to transform your space:

    1. Add a Bench or Entryway Table

When you walk in the door, your mind is usually swirling with other things, like the events of the day, what you’ll cook for dinner, or how tired you are from your shift!

As you enter your home, you want to feel at ease. You want a reprieve from the outside world.

A bench or side table will make you feel at home as soon as you enter through the door. These decorations serve a practical function, too. Use the surface to lay down tiny string lights, which will make your space even cozier.

You can sit on the bench while putting your shoes on or taking them off, and when you walk in the door with your arms full of grocery bags, keys, and/or your bag, you can set them down on the side table as you take your coat off.

Storage space hack: If you set up a bench, you can store your shoes in baskets underneath it.

    2. Hang Curtains

Beautiful, flowing curtains are the perfect way to frame your entryway. Curtains aren’t just for windows. They’re also a great way to decorate your walls.

You’ll make your entrance area feel like a cozy foyer space by hanging drapes, and once you walk past them, you’ll enter the rest of your home.

It makes the entryway feel like a secluded, quaint space to gather your bearings before you go into the busier rooms of your apartment.

You can choose translucent curtains that let light in, or opaque ones that create more of a solid barrier. To hang the curtains, you can use an adhesive strip designed not to damage your walls.

    3. Use Mirrors

Got a small entryway? Mirrors will do the trick! They have a way of making a room feel much bigger than it really is.

You can lean a full-length mirror against a wall near your door or hang it on the wall. Mirrors come in so many shapes and sizes; you’ll find one to perfectly suit your decor.

Here’s another benefit: If you put a mirror by your front door, you can check your reflection before leaving. Fix your hair, straighten your clothes, and inspect your teeth before you head out the door! It may seem like a small thing, but you’ll be surprised how often it comes in handy.

    4. Lay Down a Rug

In Winnipeg, having a doormat by your entryway is a necessity. Otherwise, you’ll bring in melted snow and mud each time you come home. Unless you want to clean your floors constantly, you’re better off using a mat to absorb the mess.

A rug also doubles as a way to create a homey entryway. Your space might be suited for a rug that covers the entire floor—or one that sits at the centre of the room. A rug that’s long and narrow can help the entryway flow into the next room.

You can select a simple pattern or one that has a busier design; try to choose a rug that matches your other decorations.

    5. Set Up a Partition

In an apartment, you can’t build a wall, so propping up a partition is the next best thing. It’s a room divider that acts as a movable wall—you can place it wherever you need it!

The beauty of room dividers is that when you don’t want them up, you can fold them and stow them away in a closet.

Let’s say you’re hauling in a large load of groceries and your partition is getting in the way. Taking it down and setting it up again later will be a breeze.

    6. Put Up a Tapestry

If you have a large, blank wall near your front door, your entryway may feel sparse and bland. Mix things up with a tapestry! Shop online, and you’ll find tapestries in all styles, from simple patterns to detailed designs. You’re sure to find one that suits your apartment.

Be careful not to choose an accent wall that’s too busy—otherwise, your entryway may feel cluttered. Leave enough space so that your decor has room to breathe.

Another great thing about a tapestry is that if you change your mind later, you can always take it down and swap it out for a different one.

    7. Buy Plants

Do you have a lot of natural light near your front door? If so, it will make the perfect place for a plant. Plants make any room seem fresher. You can choose a large plant that makes a statement, like a Kentia palm or asparagus fern.

Even if you’re short on sunlight, you can choose plants that thrive in low light, like succulents.

Plants do take up space, but they also have a way of making a room feel bigger, airier, and brighter. It’s well worth it to sacrifice some floor or wall space for a plant.

It never truly feels like the holidays until you’ve decorated your home. With a house, you have plenty of places to display your favourite decorations. But what about a small apartment?

So you’re limited on space. That doesn’t mean you need to be limited on holiday cheer! We’ve made a list of holiday decorating ideas that are perfect for a small apartment:

    Scope Out the Best Spots

It’s easy to get carried away when you’re decorating. But the bottom line is this: You don’t want your decorations to interfere with your daily living. You need to strike a balance between festive and functional.

Look for spots where you have space for a new decoration, or for belongings you could store elsewhere during the holidays.

Put Out Candles and Coloured Lights

It’s not just about the decorations you put out. It’s about the way you illuminate them.

Lights can change the entire atmosphere of a room. Set up red and yellow lights, and your apartment will feel cozy, sleepy, and warm. With blue and white lights, it will feel bright and energetic. You can hang lights near your bed, couch, and/or TV stand.

If you opt for candles instead, you get a bonus: They smell delightful. Scents have a powerful effect on your memory. By choosing scents you remember from holidays spent with your family, you can trigger vivid memories. Choose scents that fit the holiday season, such as cinnamon, peppermint, or sugar cookies.

Switch Out Pillows, Blankets, and Tablecloths

This one is easy to do and affordable. You can find new fabrics at the dollar store!

Take all the throw pillows and blankets you currently keep around the house, and shelve them for now. Replace them with more festive fabrics—gold, silver, evergreen, or red will do the trick.

Make Space for the Small Things

When you’re short on space, you need to get creative.

Try decorating with smaller things. Hunt around your home and you’re sure to find the perfect place for tiny decorations. These are items that can fit in nearly any nook or cranny.

Like paper snowflakes, which you can make yourself and tape to the window. Or pine cones, which you can use to decorate any shelf or table. Buy festive mugs that spread the holiday spirit without taking up too much space, or hang a wreath on the back of a chair.

    Put Out Family Photos

Dig out your favourite pictures from family photo albums, and find festive frames for them. This will serve as a reminder of what the holiday season is really about: Spending time with your loved ones.

    Fake Plants

Not enough natural sunlight in your apartment to grow real plants? There’s no shame in trying fake ones. You can find leaves, twigs with berries, and small trees that bring warmth and colour into your home. Try hanging them from the ceiling, wrapping them around doorways, or placing them in front of windows.

    Alternatives to a Holiday Tree

There’s nothing quite like the smell of an evergreen tree, one that fills your living room with its rich pine scent.

You might have grown up with one every year as a kid, but in an apartment, hauling a live tree into your suite just isn’t practical. It takes up too much valuable floor space!

That doesn’t mean you need to forgo the tradition altogether. Here are a few alternatives:

    Play Holiday Music

Music will instantly make your apartment feel festive, and you don’t need any more shelf space to pull it off. Set up a speaker and queue up a holiday playlist!

Choosing your new roommate is not a decision to make lightly. Here’s a person who will be sharing space with you for at least a year, paying bills with you, and seeing you when you first wake up or at the end of a possibly stressful day.

You need to be on the same page before you move in together. Why not arrange a roommate interview to get more familiar with one another? Think of it like a job interview, but for your future roommate! This is especially useful if you don’t know the person well.

We’re going over all the basics you should ask a potential roommate before deciding to live together:

Setting Up a Prospective Roommate Interview

If you’re currently friends with the person you might be living with, you can meet up at your current home (or theirs). But if you’re meeting for the first time, try a public place instead—a local coffee shop or restaurant works well.

Once you pick a date and time to meet, the next step is putting together a list of questions.

Below, we’ve listed a handful that you can use:

How Often Do You Clean or Cook?

You probably don’t have time to clean every day—you need to work to pay rent and juggle your other responsibilities, too, but what about after you cook a big meal or have guests over?

If one of you has higher cleanliness standards than the other, it’s good to be aware of that. Talk about what you’re comfortable living with and expect from one another.

One thing you and your roommate should agree on is cleanliness standards. Make your preferences clear asap. Is it okay to leave dishes in the sink after eating, or do you prefer them to be cleaned right away? What about sweeping, taking out the garbage, and cleaning the bathroom?

Try to find an arrangement that works for the two of you. You could set up a cleaning schedule to keep things consistent or designate chores.

    Where Do You Work?

According to one survey, the biggest reason why roommates get kicked out is due to not paying rent. As such, you want to make sure your potential roomie has a secure job.

If you feel comfortable, you can also ask if they have emergency savings. Talking about money can be a touchy subject, but it’s better to be prepared if you’re suddenly on the hook for their bills.

Here’s what you need to know about your rights if you are a roommate: If they stop paying rent, you will need to cover their share. Both of your names are on the lease, which means you’re also responsible for upholding it.

    How Should You Make Requests?

It’s inevitable that at one point or another, you’ll disagree on something. Maybe you want to ask your roommate to do their dishes more often, be quieter at night, or give you more privacy.

So, when one of you steps on the other’s toes, what’s the best way to address it?

Establish early on how you prefer to handle conflicts. Otherwise, you might end up in a passive-aggressive living situation where you feel like you’re always walking on eggshells. Instead of tiptoeing around pet peeves and letting resentment fester, talk it out.

Find a solution that works for both of you. For example, you can hold bi-weekly roommate meetings or just send requests via text.

How Often Do You Have Guests Over?

Let your roommate know if you’d prefer a heads-up before they have guests over. Coming home at the end of the long day to find four strangers in your living room can be an unpleasant surprise.

It’s also good to set up a policy regarding overnight guests. Communicate what you’re comfortable with!

And if your roommate is in a romantic relationship, this is something you need to know, too. How often are you okay with them having their partner over? If their S.O. is constantly around, you might feel like you have a third roommate.

    What Temperature Do You Prefer?

How warm or cool do you like your apartment? This one might seem minor, but it’s the cause of many roommate disagreements!

If you can’t agree on this, you’ll be fighting over the thermostat! Even if you prefer opposite ends of the temperature scale, try to find a middle ground that you’re both happy with.

What Does a Typical Day in Your Life Look Like?

With this question, you can get a sense of how your schedules will overlap. Are you a morning person, or do you need quiet time before you start your day?

Let’s say that one of you wakes up at the crack of dawn while the other doesn’t start work until 7 pm. Both of you will need to be mindful of the noise you make at home.

Are You Comfortable With Sharing Belongings?

You’ve agreed to share space together. But what about personal items—things like cooking utensils, furniture, and electronics?

Set these boundaries early to avoid crossing any lines. Your stance on sharing belongings is one of the most important things to discuss with your roommate before you move in

    Do You Have Any Allergies?

This one is often overlooked, but it’s crucial! If your roommate has a gluten allergy, they may request that you use a separate toaster. And if they’re seriously allergic to peanuts, you’ll need to be extra careful about leaving food out (or offering them your leftovers).

How Do You Spend Your Weekends?

Here, you’ll find out how introverted or extroverted your potential roommate is. Is their weekend full of group hangouts, pizza parties, and late-night dancing? Or do they prefer a quiet night in bed, cozied up with a book and a snack?

Ideally, you’ll find a prospective roommate who matches your level of introversion or extroversion.
